Don't look now, but the GDP is in the toilet too.

But that's because they took the initiative to pay it off. With politicians following every poll and changing their opinion to fit it, a huge tax increase would obviously not be popular.

But it is how you tax people that people notice if they are paying more. It will not be popular but will still be done.

The interest, just the interest on the national debt is over a half trillion dollars PER YEAR! If our government fails to make that payment one time, our money gets devalued to worthless paper. Mexico defaulted on their debt back in the 80's and still haven't recovered. Some piss ant country in Africa defaulted and their inflation

Right but half a trillion is only a small percent of out GDP, so the number is actually quite reasonable.

Maybe, but it didn't real seem to make a difference back then, so maybe it does not now either.
